Project Description
This project presents a pioneering approach to converting urban plastic waste into valuable pyrolytic liquid fuel through catalytic pyrolysis, with a focus on applications in Makkah. Leveraging both natural and synthetic zeolite catalysts, the research explores how reaction parameters—such as temperature, time, and plastic type—affect oil yield and quality. The resulting fuel demonstrates strong potential for electricity generation, offering a sustainable alternative to fossil fuels.
The work integrates experimental findings from multiple studies to optimize the pyrolysis process and assess its scalability. It also proposes a model for a waste biorefinery tailored to Makkah’s urban waste profile, aligning with Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030 goals for innovation, sustainability, and circular economy. The project highlights:
• Conversion of polystyrene and mixed plastic waste into high-energy liquid fuel.
• Influence of catalyst type and reaction conditions on fuel composition.
• Feasibility of deploying pyrolysis-based biorefineries in urban settings.
• Potential for reducing landfill burden and greenhouse gas emissions.
• Strategic fit with SDG targets and local energy needs.
This innovative solution not only addresses environmental challenges but also opens new avenues for entrepreneurship, energy independence, and smart city development.
